H I S T O R Y

Thomas spent the first thirty-five years of his life on land, in a small port town in the Caribbean. The son of a tailor, he was expected to learn the trade himself as he grew up and take over the family business when the time came. Dutifully, and because he had no other choice, he did as he had been raised and followed in his father's footsteps, becoming a respectable, but poor tailor. At the age of twenty-five, realizing that he would need to provide a son to be the next in line to carry on the trade, he married the daughter of a family acquaintance.

His wife was discontent with their life, which often lacked in many areas, and let her husband know just that at every available opportunity. Thomas, in turn, wasn't pleased when she was unable to produce a child, nor did he enjoy hearing her endless tirades. He began to neglect his work in favour of drinking and spending time in more 'pleasurable' company.

Eventually, having racked up a pile of debts, he decided that he would cut himself free from this life and seek his fortune elsewhere. Piracy seemed inviting - the promise of a life filled with something more thrilling than fitting and sewing clothes, not to mention the valuable gains that could be made, was hard to resist. He left his wife and home behind, persuading a ship to take him along to Tortuga.

He had little luck finding a crew to join immediately, so he decided that, for the time being, he would stay where he was and focus on preparing himself for the life of a pirate.
